Whether it's a dialogue box popping up unexpectedly, a device that isn't working properly, or a fiddly feature that's hard to understand, computer problems affect us all and are a pain in the rear end.

Fortunately, if you have an internet connection, help is just a few clicks away on a manufacturer's support page, or on independent websites provided by altruistic computer boffins.

Where to look

If you know that your problem lies with a specific program, like Windows, or a device, such as your CD drive, then your first port of call should be the manufacturer's website.

Once you're on the site, have a look for a link that says 'Support' or 'Help'. Click it and check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section, which lists common problems and their solutions.

Depending on how useful the manufacturer's website is, you should also be able to search for a solution, post a message in an online forum asking for help, send the support team an email or have a one-to-one online chat with a technician.
