Established in Edinburgh in 1727, Royal Bank of Scotland is today one of the largest UK banks with 3.3 million customers. It's part of the NatWest group. Complementing its savings products, loans and mortgages, RBS also sells home insurance.

We've reviewed its standard Home policy, its Elite cover and its Renters insurance. Quotes are only available direct from RBS as it does not appear on price comparison websites.

Its home insurance is underwritten by UK Insurance.

'The Elite policy leaves the rest behind'

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

Royal Bank of Scotland’s standard policy was solidly mid-table – getting 69% for its buildings cover and 68% for its contents cover. These compared to averages of 71% and 68%.

Royal Bank of Scotland's standard policy's highlights include garden cover as standard and up to £100,000 legal protection (though this is an optional extra).

We did find it pays relatively little for alternative accommodation if you have to be temporarily rehoused during a claim. If you have buildings cover by itself, your alternative accommodation limit is £25,000 – which sounds like a lot, but is well short of the average and below the £50,000 we'd recommend.

Key cover

Should your keys go missing (either as a consequence of loss or theft), you can rely on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s policy to cover the costs of replacing them, plus changing external locks and the locksmith’s call-out charges.

Elite and Renters

Royal Bank of Scotland's Elite policy was a higher achiever in our analysis – in the upper fifth of our table of contents cover with a score of 77% and a Best Buy.

It didn’t quite make the grade for its buildings cover – with a middling 72% score.

Royal Bank of Scotland Renters home insurance – which provides pared-down, contents-only cover to renters – did far less well, with some of the lowest scoring contents scores in our analysis. It earned 45%.

To be fair, renters' cover isn't directly comparable with products aimed at both renters and homeowners, as some of the 'missing' features (such as home emergency cover) would typically be the responsibility of the landlord.

How can you save money on Royal Bank of Scotland home insurance?

Royal Bank of Scotland doesn't sell home insurance on comparison websites, so you'll need to go to its website directly, call it or visit one of its branches for a quote. You'll most likely get the best deal online.

Discounts are given if you buy both buildings and contents insurance.

It's also in a minority of home insurers that offer a 'Switcher Fee' to those jumping ship from other providers. This is a contribution (up to £50) towards cancellation fees you're charged if you switch before renewal.

Want to pay monthly? Good news – Royal Bank of Scotland doesn't charge interest if you choose to pay monthly rather than annually.

The above information is correct as of August 2025. For more ways to save money when buying insurance, see our guide.

How does Royal Bank of Scotland compare with other providers?

Its building cover for its standard Home policy scored 69%, just below standard policies from The AA and Admiral, which both scored 70%.

As for contents insurance, RBS's standard policy scored 68%, beaten by standard policies from Which? Recommended Provider Tesco and Lemonade – with a score of 70%.

How can I claim?

If you need to make a claim with Royal Bank of Scotland home insurance, you can do so online or call 0345 246 0452. In emergencies, call 0345 878 6021.

Should you buy Royal Bank of Scotland home insurance?

Given it's a Best Buy, if you're considering Royal Bank of Scotland's Elite policy and the price is right, then yes.

But if you're looking at its standard policy, know that there are plenty of better alternatives out there. And if you're considering the renters policy, be sure you only need the limited cover it contains.
