Saga has provided a range of products and services to over-50s in the UK for more than 70 years. Alongside home insurance, you can also buy Saga car insurance, private health insurance and travel cover.

Its home insurance is underwritten by a panel of Acromas, Ageas, Lloyds Bank General Insurance, and Prestige Underwriting Services Limited (on behalf of Aviva).

We've reviewed its two home insurance policies – its standard Saga Plus policy and also Saga Select. You can only buy the Plus policy direct from Saga. Price comparison websites include Saga Select.

We've also surveyed 41 Saga customers who've recently made a home insurance claim.

‘Saga's Plus policy was a standout on paper – but not a Best Buy’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

Saga's Plus policy earned 73% (around average) for its buildings cover. Its contents cover (scoring 82%) was one of the top five policies rated and the highest-scoring standard policy.

Its highlights include uncapped trace and access cover (within the policy's overall sum insured limit). This pays for work to uncover the cause of a problem (such as a leak) in or under your home.

It also covers cash and credit cards lost or stolen from your home up to £1,000.

On the downside, it charges an above-average interest rate (22.9% APR) to customers paying monthly. And while it covers burst pipes, you can't claim on it for pipe blockages.

We were generally very impressed with its contents cover on paper, but poor customer feedback (see below) meant we couldn’t make it a Which? Best Buy.

Fixed-price promise

Saga's Plus policy comes with its signature three-year fixed-price promise. As the name suggests, it means Saga won’t raise your price for three years, provided there are no changes to your policy and you've not claimed on the accidental damage, accidental loss or personal possessions parts of your cover.

You aren't bound to stay with the Saga during that period if you find a better price in the interim. However, this goes both ways. Its T&Cs say that in certain circumstances during this period, if your risk significantly changes from the perspective of its underwriters, it won’t necessarily renew your cover.

Saga Select

The Select policy offers less comprehensive cover but is more flexible, featuring optional elements like personal belongings and accidental damage cover, which are standard in the Plus policy. It also comes without the fixed price promise.

Select managed fairly mediocre scores of 65% for contents and 69% for buildings, which is below the respective averages of 68% and 71%.

How did customers rate Saga home insurance?

We asked Saga customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.

Saga received a customer score of 56% – 17th out of 17 providers rated, so it sits at the bottom of our table.

It scored 51% when we asked people to rate its claims handling – 22nd out of 24 brands compared. See the list of results here.

When we asked more about the rating customers gave Saga, one unhappy policyholder told us: 'I have had an ongoing claim for subsidence for six years and now my house is uninhabitable.' Another said: 'They were not at all helpful.'

However, others did find the claims process to be quick and easy: 'They generally kept us up to date and were fair on the offer they gave me'.

How does Saga compare with other providers?

With a customer score of 56%, Saga is at the bottom of our table out of 17 providers rated. Just above is Halifax in 16th place with a customer score of 60%.

Its building cover for its standard Plus policy scored 73%. Above are Sagic, Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Aviva – all their standard polices scored 74%.

As for contents insurance, Saga's standard policy scored an impressive 82%, the highest-scoring standard policy in our table.

Saga home insurance: how can I claim?

If you need to make a claim with Saga home insurance, refer to your policy documents for the phone number relevant to your policy or call 0800 092 1426 in a home emergency.

For guidance on the claims process, visit the Saga website.

Should you buy Saga home insurance?

Saga's poor customer and claims scores give us real cause for concern.

True, its Plus policy has excellent cover on paper, but that will provide little comfort if you have a poor claims experience.

The below-average scores of its Select policy means you can do better elsewhere.
